Hints and Tips
Do you have any favourite hints and tips you would like to share. Send them in and we’ll do our best to find a little corner for them - and you’ll get a mention.
Here’s a few to start things moving..

Save your old egg cartons to use as mini plant pots for your seeds (the old style fibre ones are best). Don’t forget that plastic cups and yoghurt pots can also be used..

When sowing fine seeds in a row, first mix them with a little sand which will help in handling and dispersing your seeds.

Stop slugs getting to your conatiner plants - smear outside of container with some petroleum jelly or WD40.

Dried flowers can be sprayed with hair lacquer to prevent them dropping.

Stand a kitchen roll cardboard tube upright in the centre of a planter and fill it with pebbles.  When you add compost gradually remove the tube releasing the pebbles for perfect drainage.

Use ice cubes to water your hanging baskets...

Add a carton of plain yoghurt to your compost to aid decomposition.

Where possible avoid watering with cold or chlorinated water, leave to standing for a few hours before use.

Natural methods to get rid of greenfly and other insects - to spray plants, use water infused with garlic, or even soapy water works.

Plant garlic gloves around areas where greenfly normally attack. Not only does it help to keep the pests at bay, you have a harvest of tasty garlic to look forward to.
